Neck And Shoulder Muscle Injury

After an auto accident, it is very common for the neck and shoulder areas to become sore. This pain can be caused by muscle strains, sprains, or muscle spasms. Although they can be very painful, muscle damage can be easily repaired with rest, physical therapy, medication management, and even medication management. Ligament damage can be more severe. Ligament damage can cause permanent injuries to the neck. This requires ongoing therapy and maintenance during flare-ups.

Whiplash

Although whiplash is no longer considered a medical term, it is still used to describe injuries that result from whipping the head with a sudden impact. The surrounding tissues and spine can be damaged if the head moves violently and then stops or retracts. Whiplash can be used to describe the pain. An injury can lead to severe pain, numbness, headaches, as well as all kinds of stability and balance problems.

Disc Bulges And Disc Herniations

The discs are a part of the spine. These discs act as shock absorbers or cushions for your vertebrae. They have a hard exterior and a soft inner. The disc’s soft gelatinous portion is not intended to protrude from the shell. The disc’s soft gelatinous part is not meant to protrude through the shell. However, if the vertebrae become twisted or compressed, the disc may burst and lose its shape. The bulge or herniation is a disc material that protrudes towards the spinal nerves. It depends on how severe the condition is. The disc can press against nerves and cause pain, numbness, or tingling to the affected area. Disc bulges can be treated conservatively with physical therapy. Disc herniations, however, can cause nerve damage and even death depending on how deep the disc protrudes into the nerve. Herniations can be treated with conservative care, injection therapy, and, in rare cases, surgery. Both disc bulges, as well as herniations, can be permanent. The disc will continue to break down over time.

Fractured or Dislocated Vertebrae

A displacement of the vertebrae may occur when the ligaments holding the vertebrae together become torn. This can cause them to move. When the bone breaks or cracks, it is called a fracture of the vertebrae.

These injuries are rare but can be very serious. These symptoms may be similar to other neck injuries. It is important to seek a diagnostic test, such as an MRI if you experience pain after an accident. These injuries can be treated with rest and conservative care such as physical therapy. Special care should be taken if a dislocation occurs or the condition worsens.
